Success Story 1

I left school in grade 9 and started working. Years down the road, I had the opportunity to further my career but needed to get my Ontario Secondary School Diploma to go into a postsecondary program. It had been a long time since I had sat in a classroom and worked on math equations.

I worked with the learning alternatives program to create a flexible schedule that worked for me. They assessed my skills and started programming based on where my skills were and worked with me in a supportive environment. I spent a couple months upgrading my math skills so that I was better prepared to go into an accredited math course.

Success Story 2

The pandemic brought a lot of changes to my career, including a need to develop my digital technology skills including emailing, Microsoft Word, and Excel. Luckily, I found the Learning Alternatives Program who was able to work with me to create a schedule that accommodated my work schedule and busy home life. We started by working one to one, which gave me the confidence to gradually complete activities on my own.

While accessing the Learning Alternatives Program, I could work in the classroom with instructors, and they provided me with resources I could look at in the future. I liked being able to complete activities that mimicked the type of work I am doing on the job.
